St. Joseph Parish

VBA was commissioned for full design and construction administration services for the first phase of the restoration of a historic Roman Catholic Church, Parish Center, Rectory, and School complex.  VBA also provided programming and master plan preparation, creating a phased plan for the Church to guide their future renovations.  Located in the thriving community of Astoria, Queens, the Church was originally built in 1880.  The project called for restoration of all historic elements, new decorative painting, functional changes, and a new Gathering space with ramp access for the Church and Parish Center. The circulation was redesigned and the liturgical setting was updated.  Side aisles were created for perimeter circulation.  Acoustical improvements were designed and a new mechanical and electrical distribution system were installed.  The Parish did no have an existing organ in the Church.  VBA facilitated the installation for a new electro-mechanical action organ.  This project received a Merit Award from New York State AIA Architecture Awards program.
