Fordham University Church

VBA was retained to restore the Fordham University Church at the Rose Hill campus. The project was a complete exterior restoration of the Landmark Church.  VBA completed schematic design through construction administration services for the University. The exterior marble stone facade was cleaned and re-pointed.  VBA completed an extensive exterior survey of the Church facade to develop the scope of repair.  Working with a conservator, mockups of the stone re-pointing and cleaning were completed to develop the repair methodology.  Based on those mockups, the contractor was able to properly restore the entire stone facade.  Structural cracks were repaired and joints were re-pointed with mortar to match the historic. The cast-stone trim and decorative elements, added in the 1920’s, were replaced with modern cast-stone with a “brownstone” appearance  to match the historic finish.  The cast-stone tracery and sills around the stained glass windows were replaced, as were the door surrounds and bell tower ornament.  The stained glass windows were removed from the Church to facilitate the tracery replacement and to repair and clean the leaded glass.  The plaster moulding around the interior of the windows were also completely restored.  The large wood doors and wood window trims were also stripped, restored and refinished.  A portion of the slate roof was replaced to match the existing. VBA also designed a new entrance plaza for the Church.  A curved Plaza was created at the front of the Church to provide a welcoming entrance and overflow space.  An ADA ramp was also incorporated into the Plaza design.  New period exterior light fixtures were custom designed and located on the cheek walls of the Plaza.
